The sun was back in the sky at Alcaniz for the Final of the first round of the Mondokart.com FIA Karting European Championship – KZ2. The thermometer took advantage of this to reach 25°. Mattéo Spirgel (Sodi/TM) and Artem Severiukhin (Birel ART/TM) shared the front row of the starting grid ahead of Daniel Vasile (Birel ART/TM) and Timo Jüngling (Sodi/TM).
Vasile took the lead from the second row, ahead of Spirgel, Severiukhin, Jüngling, Marek Skrivan (IPK/TM) 4th and Kasper Schormans (Sodi/TM) 5th. Maksim Orlov (Parolin/TM) moved up eight places to 7th ahead of Matteo Zanchi (Birel ART/TM), who moved up 10 places. Spirgel regained the lead, Vasile replied with Severiukhin in his wake in an epic battle on lap 4. Behind the two Birel ART karts, the three Sodi karts engaged in an internal battle that cost them time. At the halfway point, Vasile was 2 tenths ahead of Severiukhin and Spirgel was 3rd at 4 tenths, followed by Schormans in 4th at 1.2″. Orlov was back in the top five. Spirgel plunged to 2nd ahead of Severiukhin on lap 10 of 18. The gaps then fluctuated around 2 tenths between the top three. Orlov, in 4th place, was a second back. Spirgel threatened from lap 16, but Vasile protected his position. Vasile took 0.126” ahead of Spirgel, while Orlov took 3rd place at the final bend, passing Severiukhin. Zanchi finished 5th, Schormans 6th and Tim Locati (Sodi/TM) 7th ahead of Paavo Tonteri (CRG/TM). Skrivan was 9th and Albin Stureson (OTK/TM) 10th, with a gain of 15 places.
